The New York ground transportation scene is unlike any other. More than 100 million passengers fly in and out of New York City’s three airports every year. They are insured for a maximum of four passengers, and typically cannot carry more than 3 pieces of checked luggage.   

Gypsy Cabs – These are private cars whose drivers roam the airports, baggage claim areas and sometimes hotels looking for passengers. The cars and drivers are not appropriately licensed or insured (though sometimes they look the same).  In many cases, gypsy cab drivers are not able to pass the criminal background check, drug test or strict safe driving requirements of authorized drivers. Their vehicles do not undergo the routine safety inspections required of authorized vehicles. Gypsy cabs are illegal and using their service can be dangerous.
